How to Know if the Lord is Speaking to You

Proverbs 16
1To humans belong the plans of the heart,
but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.

2 All a person’s ways seem  pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.
3 Commit to Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
John 15
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
Romans 12
2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Last week, in my message, Daylight Savings Time, I talked about how with the longer days, we have more time to do the Lord’s work.  In June 2024, the Lord told me to start hosting a no pressure, no judgement Bible study in our home.  Admittedly, I wasn’t immediately obedient - but I did do it.  I wrestled with hosting a Bible study outside of a church, but I have had formal training in leading Bible studies, I have experience with it, and I enjoy it, so…it wasn’t as far-fetched, in hindsight as I made it out to be at the time.  It was constantly on my mind for several weeks and I knew it wasn’t one of Kim’s original thoughts because if it were my idea, I wouldn’t have been so reluctant.  Finally, I was cooking dinner after work one evening, and arguing with God.
I said, “And where am I supposed to hold this Bible study?”
He said, “In this house I gave you!”
I said, “And how am I supposed to tell people about it - just put it on Facebook?”
And He said, “Like you do everything else!”

So I did it, and it was GOOD!  We started with the book of Jonah, then Matthew, and more.  Once we set the clocks back and it was dark at 6pm, attendance began to wane.  Then after the Christmas break, we never got back on track.  It’s been on my mind this year to start again.  At least 20 people have asked me if I had plans to start again in 2026.  I started Bible study again on Thursday - and you are invited for this Thursday!

I wrote, in a message back in October, that in the time I wasn’t writing and sharing this weekly message, I was convicted nearly every week at church.  That is not a good feeling.  I started writing again.

I wrote a few weeks ago that I had made the decision to become an active realtor, again.  It had been on my mind, I thought I was seeing signs, then I received an award at work which was accompanied by a financial bonus - about the amount required to pay my Realtor Association and MLS fees…so I thought that was the Lord!  I texted my former Broker In Charge to ask him what I would need to do to return to active, and I was also kind of asking if he would have me back.  I wasn’t sure he would even remember me.  He remembered me!  The other BIC started texting me balloons, other agents sent congratulatory texts, emails from the MLS and Association flooded my inbox - I was like - WOW!

So, how do you know if the things you feel inclined to do are from the Lord or if they are just your own desires.  Here’s how I see it:

  • It keeps coming up.  It nags at you and will not leave you alone!
  • You dream of doing it, even if you don't want to do it. I have found that when the Holy Spirit is trying to tell me something, my state of consciousness is irrelevant.  He will tell me day-in and day-out until I do it.
  • Other people, not knowing, mention it.  I do believe God sends messengers to confirm His plans for our lives.
  • He may give a confirmation.  Some people call it a “God-wink” to help us decide, or immediately after we decide to be obedient.  Something happens that confirms we made the decision He wanted us to make.
  • You feel guilty for not doing it.  This may come in the form of a conviction.  God doesn’t make us feel guilty, but because we are His children, we should be seeking to do His will.  When we knowingly are not doing His will, guilt is the result.

Finally, if there is something you want to do, but you’re still not sure if it’s the Lord telling you to do it or if it’s just on your mind, ask yourself the questions below.
  • Is it good?
  • Does it help other people?
  • Will it point others to Christ?
If you answered YES to the questions above, then you should definitely do it.  Someone’s salvation may be dependent upon your obedience - that gets me every time!!!  Amen!!!

If you would like to join me for Bible study on Thursdays at 6pm, call or text me at 803.448.3548 for my address.  We would love to have you!  We are studying the book of James!  Come and bring a friend!  Amen!

In December, I decided to start the process of republishing my first 4 novels.  It had been on my mind for several years due to their prices with the original publisher.  I have had new covers made, I've read the books and made some edits, and it's been a whole process.  I also wrote a new book, called Teach Like Jesus.  At some point soon, I will be hosting a Book Release Celebration.  I would love for all of my readers to come!

And...if you have any real estate needs or want to know the value of your home, please give me a call at 803.448.3548.

Peace, Love and Blessings!
Thank you for reading!

Excellent points. He will also give you Scripture to convince you that it’s Him speaking to you as well which could be a God-wink!

This was so inspiring. I thank God for people like you, his people. Your obedience along will take you places that no man can take you. God is our source. He gives us resources. I pray that God continues to bless the work of your hands with his mighty hands. He is pleased with his daughter.

I am a wife, a mother, and grandmother!
I've been sharing thoughts for many years in the form of books, videos, and blog posts.  On this page I seek to share a thought the Lord has placed upon my heart each week to illustrate how He is a part of our everyday lives.  He has not forsaken us, and is with us until the end of the age.
